Brandon Wellington tuo ammattimaisuutta joukkueeseen

Butchersin 25-vuotias yhdysvaltalaistukimies Brandon Wellingtonin (#9) saapuminen Suomeen ja Porvooseen toi heinäkuussa mukavaa pöhinää laji-innokkaiden ”kahvipöytäkeskusteluihin”. Wellingtonhan tuli ykköstason yliopistosta, josta sen jälkeen ylsi jopa NFL-organisaatioon, muttei koskaan murtautunut Indianapolis Coltsin lopulliseen rosteriin. Lajiaktiivisuus ei kuitenkaan päättynyt siihen.
Seattle Washingtonissa syntynyt Brandon aloitti jenkkifutiksen jo 7-vuotiaana. Siinä vaiheessa hänellä ei ollut vielä aavistusta, mihin kaikki johtaisi, mutta kuitenkin siitä hetkestä lähtien, kun hän laittoi kypärän ensi kertaa päähänsä, hän on aina lajista nauttinut. Kysyttäessä miten mies päätyi keskellä kesää Butchersiin, Brandon kertoo, että sen jälkeen, kun NFL-haave kariutui, hän etsi pelipaikkaa jostakin, jotta saisi pelaamisestaan videoita ja auttaisi samalla joukkuetta kaikin tavoin. Sitten löytyi Euro Players-sivusto, jonka kautta hän lähetti viestejä eri joukkueisiin, joilla oli pelaajahaku päällä. Vain parin päivän päästä seurastamme oltiin yhteydessä ja sopimus saatiin sorvattua.
Brandon kertoo olevansa enemmän kuin kiitollinen saamastaan mahdollisuudesta pelata Butchersissa. -On tuntunut hyvältä palata takaisin pelihommiin ja ”lentää” kentällä ympäriinsä joukkuekavereiden kanssa.
Elämä Porvoon kaltaisessa kaupungissa on ollut täydellinen vastakohta siihen, mihin Wellington on tottunut kotimaassaan. Brandon on kokenut, että ihmiset ovat Suomessa aika paljon itsekseen ja vetäytyvät sisätiloihin jo iltakahdeksaan mennessä. -Täällä on todella hiljaista ja rauhallista. Siellä, mistä olen kotoisin, tapahtuu aina jotain. Ihmiset ovat ulkona ja paljon puheliaampia. Mutta ympäristön ja paikan muutos on ollut minulle siunaus, koska se on antanut minulle mahdollisuuden palautua ja löytää rauha pienistä asioista. Brandon kertoo viettävänsä vapaa-aikaansa kotimaassaan samoin kuin täällä. - Pysyn sisällä, pelaan Xboxia, katson elokuvia ja kuuntelen musiikkia. Se, että näkisit minut ulkona, on erittäin harvinaista.

Wellingtonin lyhyen Butchers-periodin aikana edessä on kauden toistaiseksi tärkein ottelu eli välierä Helsinki Roostersia vastaan. Miten Roostersin voittoputki katkaistaan ja kestomenestyjä kaadetaan tulevana sunnuntaina jo 3. kerran tällä kaudella? Siihen Brandonilla selkeä resepti. - Kilpaile! Niin yksinkertaista. Meidän on tultava peliin kilpailemaan, emmekä saa tyytyä siihen, mihin olemme päässeet tähän asti. Roosters on yhdistänyt palasia ja se on johtanut heidät menestykseen, mutta meidän on vielä tehtävä parhaimpamme. Tämä sunnuntai on meille loistava tilaisuus laittaa omat palaset yhteen ja kilpailla loppuun asti joka osa-alueella. Siihen tarvitaan enemmän kuin yksi pelaaja, ihan sama millä pelipaikalla pelataan. Joten yleisö mukaan lukien, tarvitsemme kaikkien panosta tuomaan positiivisuutta sunnuntain otteluun.
Siinäpä tulikin jo terveisiä porvoolaisfaneille, mutta vielä yhdestä asiasta Brandon haluaa porvoolaisia muistuttaa. – Haluan kiittää kaikkia ihmisiä ja faneja, jotka ilmestyvät paikan päälle kannustamaan meitä. First, tell us a little about your background, yourself and how you got involved in football?
”I was born February 2nd 1998, am only child born in Seattle Washington, but was raised around all my cousins so that brotherly and sisterly love was always felt. I started playing football at the age of 7 and at the time didn’t know what to expect but ever since I put that helmet on it was always something I enjoyed doing.”
How did you end up playing in Porvoo?
”After being cut by the Colts in 2020 and an XFL showcase in 2022, I have been looking for a place to play again to get more film and help contribute to the team in anyway I could, so I discovered a site called Euro players and started messaging all teams that were in need of import players and within a couple of days Markku (Vuoksenturja) messaged me back with an offer and after some back and forth we came to an agreement and got a flight out here.”
After few games, how has playing in this Finnish Mable League felt?
”I am beyond grateful for the opportunity at hand to be able to play here. It has felt good to get back out there and fly around and make plays with my teammates.”
How has Porvoo and life in this town felt and how have you spent your free time?
”Life in this town as been a complete flip of what I’m used to. Over here people are very to themselves, inside by 8 p.m and it’s really quiet and easy going. Where I’m from there’s always something going on, people outside & people are more talkative. But the change of environment and place has been a blessings because it’s allowed me to reset and find peace in the little things. Even though the place I come from there’s always something going on. I spend my free time the same there as I do here, stay inside, play my Xbox, watch movies & listen to music. If you see me outside it is very rare.”
You’ve been playing with the Butchers for a short time and only some games. But now the final climax of the record-equal league is approaching and on Sunday we will face the successful Roosters. The goal is, of course, to grab the third Roosters victory of this season, supported by the home crowd. How can the Roosters’ winning streak be broken in the so far most important match of the season?
”Compete. Simple as that. We have to come out and compete and not be happy to just be here. They have put pieces together and it has lead to their success, but we have yet to play our best football. This Sunday is a great opportunity for us to put it all together and compete till the end on all phases. It is going to take more than just one person, no matter the roll you play. So crowd included, we will need everyone to step up and add something positive in the game on Sunday.”
At this point, what kind of greetings do you want to send to the home crowd for next Sunday?
”I would like to send my thanks to all the people and fans, that will show up and cheer us on Sunday. Only thing I ask is that you Make it loud for the Roosters when they are on offense and we will feed off of one another’s energy! Go Butchers 🤘🏽”
